I love serendipity.
I was just thinking about teaching Anglo-Saxons and Vikings next year, and “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin came through iTunes.
Magnificent.

I was only 19, by Redgum – how could I forget that one?? I showed a clip of them in concert once, to a class, and had to leave the class because I was getting teary. I also went to hear John Schumann and Frank talk about it, at a conference, once – and got teary there, too, because they played it.
Mr Bojangles – most recently, that I heard, by Robbie Williams. What a heartbreaking story. Can’t stand it.
Songs that make me cry
1. Brighteyes, by Simon and Garfunckle, from the movie Watership Down, which I saw as a kid and refuse to see again.
2. To her door, by Paul Kelly; it’s just so heart-breaking, and so real.
3. Forever Autumn, by Justin Hayward (singer for the Moody Blues), from Jeff Wayne’s musical version of War of the Worlds, which was one of the first CDs I ever bought. Again, this is a heartbreaking song… and just beautiful.
The iPod in my head
J thinks I am terribly funny, because I have music in my head most of the time… probably even when I sleep.
The other idea I had quite a schizophrenic day. Thanks to JJJ, I had Adalita from Magic Dirt’s cover of “Double Dare”, which is very dark and brooding and just a little threatening, in my head. It was combined, though, with the lovely Lior’s “This old love” – which is as mellow and lovely and delightful as they come.
So, crazy day in my head.
Carole King
Carole King being interviewed on the 7:30 Report, as she’s in the country at the moment – wish I was going to see her, but oh well. She comes across as a lovely person; it’s bizarre to think that she was originally too shy to perform herself. She was performing in James Taylor’s band as a back-up singer, and he basically forced her up the front to perform at a concert. That’s cool.
Ooh, footage of her singing “You’ve got a friend” – shivers up the spine! She’s just great. “It’s too late” is still one of my favouritest songs ever. Which is a bit odd, and probably disturbing to J, but eh.
I didn’t know she was an environmentalist. That’s cool too.
More ARIAs
Youth Group: up there with Augie March with Radiohead as whiney little boys (although not so little, since Youth Group has been around for 9 years…).
I quite like “Flaunt it,” by TV Rock, so I’m glad they just won their second ARIA. Particularly as they beat out three Idol dudes. Mahaha.
Axle Whitehead on the ARIAs… such a long way from college.
Human Nature wins Highest Selling Album with Motown… leads to two things: 1. Can’t stand Human Nature, but they do this sound quite good, although definitely white (and the pink shirts are just bad); 2. Mothers’ Day. That’s why they won this section. OOH – one of them just said he was gay! Basically. How fabulous that this is now accepted on Channel Ten.
Can’t wait for Silverchair… can’t believe they weren’t one of the highlights of the advertising campaign… maybe they were and I missed it.
The ARIAs
Until just now, when the Veronicas (urgh; and my GOODness they look trampy) beat out Rogue Traders and Josh Pyke for Best Pop Release, I had picked all the winners… ok so that’s only three, but still. Wolfmother for Best Breakthrough Album or whatever (aroooo!), Hilltop Hoods for Best Urban, and Youth Group for Best Breakthrough Single (much as I really find that song whingy and annoying).
This might turn into something of a running commentary… I am mostly watching this for Wolfmother, Bernarld Fanning and the Hoods, but Eskimo Joe were ok first up too. And – embarrassing as it is to admit – Rogue Traders too….
Later edit: weren’t the Rogue Traders meant to perform? I didn’t see them….
The Neverending Story
I am watching JTV, and the dude from Butterfly Effect has chosen the song from The Neverending Story as his request!! Ive never seen the film clip, which is of course just clips from the movie, with the occasional shot of the dude who sang it… who has really, really bad 80s hair: half blonde (the top half), the other half black; spiked on top… and long at the back. Urgh. It has, however, reminded me of just how much I loved that movie. And, to be honest, still do: I haven’t seen it in years, and I feel the urge to find it. Or to read the book, which was of course much better than the movie; and let’s not even mention the second (although at the time I liked it… only because of Jonothan Brandis…), and the third – which I watched only because of my sister – was enough to make me do something drastic.
The vid clip show Atreyu losing Artax in the Swamp… that was one of the saddest things I had ever seen on film at that point, barring only Watership Down.

Holly’s mum is Margaret Throsby! From Classic FM! How funny!
And I still have 1% doubt about the connection between Xavier and Kevin Rudd….
Foos and Eagles
I’m watching Eagles of Death Metal on JTV, which is always a wonderful thing, and just saw Dave Grohl, which makes me sad – they’re coming to Aus for an acoustic set – how cool!! But they’re only going to Sydney – how bad!!
I wonder if the chick in the vid clip really is in the band? She carries a drum at one point… that would be very cool.
