Chrissy Amphlett
She was just on Denton. What a truly amazing woman – getting over her alcohol addiction, paying off debts, getting herself back together. And it was very funny having her Mum and cousin there, commenting on her performances and antics – Mum comes across as a very tolerant woman, very loving. I think there has been a bio written recently of her – I don’t think I’ll read it, but it would be interesting. [I haven’t even managed to read Jim Morrison’s bio yet, and Chrissy is some way behind him. (Hey, now there’s a reason to go to Paris – go to the cemetery…).] Anyway, she’s very cool, and I hope they do actually play her acoustic performance. And I have to wait up to see Ben Elton, too….
JTV
Have I mentioned how very excited I am about JTV happening?? It’s going to be GREAT not to have to watch bad “Top 50” videos!
Yay. Yay yay yay.
Pussycat Dolls
Hmm, with what I’ve been blogging the last little while, anyone would think I was trying to increase traffic through here…
Anyway, my question is this: do the Pussycat Dolls really count themselves as a singing group? As a band? I’ve heard them described as a cabaret act, and that certainly seems closer to the reality of their video clips, and the one time I saw them on some awards show. Only one of them actually makes any attempt at singing; all the others are just there for eye-candy. Doesn’t really make that much sense to me, but then – I’m not exactly their target audience.
Ads and Artemis
I can’t really pretend this is an unusual thing anymore – once again, I am flicking between Video Hits and Rage. But that’s not the point of this post. No: the point is Britney Spears, and not even her ‘music’. The ad was for her new perfume. Basically, I think she’s heard the story of Artemis and Aktaeon, and got it mixed up a bit in her head. In the ad, she (the goddess, of course), is being pursued by a hunter, who has fallen in love with her; he shoots her with a ‘magic love arrow’ or somesuch (so maybe Aktaeon and Eros have got mixed up in her head… who’s to say?), and they live happily ever after. Very curious. And all of this, of course, takes place in a forest… very primal.
New music
I have two new favourite songs: Ruby Blue, by Roisin Murphy – I’m seriously thinking about buying this album, if it is actually out yet – and Supermassive Black Hole, by Muse. I don’t think I will buy that album, but it’s a very very cool song.
And the father of a friend of mine has just discovered Wolfmother, which I think is very funny. She’s got a copy of the CD, but hasn’t listened to it yet; be interesting to see what she thinks, because I don’t think she’s quite such a fan of Led Zeppelin; I think she is more Split Enz (whom she will be seeing in a couple of weeks), and Moody Blues-type music.
Lovetrain
I really love the new song by Wolfmother, Lovetrain. It’s the B-side for White Unicorn. I’m not going to go out and buy the single, so I really hope that it comes out on their next album, whenever that happens. If not, guess I’ll have to go the iTunes route, long as it is still there…
Wolfmother album
I just saw an ad for the Wolfmother album. Not a new one, just the old one – the album I bought months ago. I haven’t seen an ad for it before today. They must have made enough to afford an ad, or something… it did make me laugh, as well as making me quite bemused. As if it was a recent appearance in the stores. Pft.
Sucks be to Post-modernism
How I enjoy being me: not being at BDO, I have put on the Wolfmother concert I taped off Rage ages ago (bad me). I am also reading Charles Freeman’s The Greek Achievement.
This is not the reason I can say nasty things to postmodernists, although it is a bit out there.
No, the reason I am feeling smug towards PMs at the moment is what I just read in the aforementioned book. There was a philosopher who lived around 490-420BC, name of Protagoras. His most famous words, apparently, are “man is the measure of all things.” He claimed that if one person said a drink was bitter, then it is true to say that it is bitter; and if another person said the same drink was sweet, it was true to say it was indeed sweet. Ha ha! PMs are not so postmodern after all! They are indeed rehashing ancient ideas! And to add a cherry to this glorious statement, Freeman continues with: “This was easily challenged by Democritus, and after him, Plato. If all beliefs are true, so too is the belief that no beliefs are true and there is an insoluble contradition.” Mahahahaha.
*sigh* Back to school tomorrow.
New music, oh yeh
Thanks to various fortuitous events, I/we had some vouchers to spend at music places. Score!
Goldfrapp – Supernature – because Kat had burnt it for me to see if I liked it, and I love it.
Oasis – (What’s the Story) Morning Glory – the bro had it on tape (!) and I loved it, and for $10, who can go wrong?
Fleetwood Mac – Very Best of – again, $10… love Stevie Nicks.
Jamiroqai – Dynamite (his latest) – just because I thought I should own some.
Foo Fighters – In Your Honour – because I went to their concert without owning their latest CD, and thought I should.
Led Zeppelin – How the West was Won – all live stuff. 25 minutes of Whole Lotta Love! The price sticker said $40 or something, but I figured for 3 CDs I could deal with it (and it wasn’t real money)… but it scanned at $20! As Darryl says, Gold!
The bro also gave me John Mayall, The Turning Point, for Christmas – I specified the artist, he chose the album randomly. I remembered him from the show Dancing in the Streets and I thought I should get into some old blues. This one is different because there it’s blues minus drum, so you can actually here the bass… and the sax, and the flute…
